Tricolor amaranth is an annual herbal flower. Plant height is 80-120 cm, stems are erect, smooth and rarely branched. Leaves alternate, oval to oval-lanceolate, pointed at the apex, tapering at the base, dark red. In early summer, the top leaves begin to change color, turn red in autumn, and turn bright red in late autumn. There are also varieties with deep yellow, orange and complex colors.

Flowers are very small, gathered in green spikes, and these inflorescences are densely clustered and inserted in the tip axils.

Tricolor amaranth is mainly for viewing leaves rather than flowers, and the viewing period is from August to October. The top leaves of Yanlaihong are bright red, the top leaves of Yanlaihuang are red-yellow, and the top leaves of Jinxifeng are red, yellow and green at the same time.
Tricolor amaranth prefers a sunny, warm, dry and ventilated cultivation environment. It is not resistant to water and moisture and requires sandy soil with strong drainage, but it is resistant to alkaline soil. The soil for seedling growth requires moist and fertile soil, while the soil for later growth needs to be dry, especially when the leaves turn red in autumn. If the environment is dry and ventilated, the leaf color will be more vivid.

Tricolor amaranth is propagated by seeds, and seedlings are sown in open field seedbeds between April and May in spring. After the seedbed is leveled and irrigated, the seeds are sown, then covered with a thin layer of fine soil, and then covered with a reed curtain to maintain humidity, and germination can take place in about 4 to 5 days. Due to the small size of the seeds, the germination is generally denser and requires 2 to 3 times of thinning.
